Here it hasn’t been the races but the emigration to Canada which has been the excitement. I was down at the quay for a little while but the wind and dust were just too much for me so I came home and did my arrears of darning. Katie was out all day seeing her sister off and came back “a’ begreettin” poor lass! She is more cheerful now … Stornoway 27th Apr. 1923

Saturday here was a stirring day. I do not think we have ever seen the town, or rather the quays, so crowded. The occasion was the embarkation of about 300 emigrants for Canada. The big ship “Metagama” of the Canadian Pacific R[ailwa]y. Co[mpan]y. came in about 10 o’clock & anchored inside the harbour mouth off Stoneyfield … Stornoway 24th Apr. 1923

Two girls aged about 16 have just been in asking for Testimonials. They are going to Canada in April. A ship is to come to Sy. for about 400 young men and women. It makes it attractive to them to be picked up here. These lassies struck me as young, young to be starting life on their own. An agent from the Canadian Govt. is here picking them up … Stornoway 8th Feb. 1923
