From the archives; sgadan skirmish

One of the great things about working with records is finding more than you bargained for.  The Tasglann had a researcher last week who was interested in tracing records of an ancestor who had fallen on hard times and was taken into the Coulregrein Poor House in Stornoway.  We managed to find her ancestor in a Parochial Board of Stornoway Minute Book (item #R1.231), who turned out to be a bit of a character, but we found a few more characters in newspaper articles pasted in the front pages of the book.

This clipping was taken from a Highland News dated Saturday 20 May 1893.

Though this account of a fight between two sisters is humorous at points, it also hints at a darker and (as yet) untold story of Stornoway’s poor.
