Cladh Hallan

Interactive Map

I was recently made aware of the fantastic website for Cladh Hallan, a cemetery in Daliburgh, South Uist.  This site has digitised and made available for free the burial records of the cemetery, working for over two years to bring it to this stage.

Those who developed the site deserve our every respect, as the wealth of information available is exhaustive, yet the site remains quite personal, making it a fitting tribute to those who have passed.

It is a great site for family historians as not only have the burial records and gravestones been transcribed, but there are quite often photographs of the deceased, an obituary from the newspaper, and links to the gravestones of relatives.  You can search by either township or surname, or use the interactive map (shown above).  New information is being added all the time, and the site welcomes any additional information.

It is again a great example of the work being carried out in the communites of the Isles, and the fact that the information is free to all who are interested is demonstrative of the generous nature of its people.

One Response to Cladh Hallan

  1. What a brilliant site! I’ve just passed the link to a gentleman in Prince Edward Island who’d been in touch about his South Uist relatives. I hadn’t been able to help him much but I think he’ll be able to get lots of information here. Thanks for sharing it!
