Friday photo: A wander in the grounds

I was answering an enquiry this week in the WJ Gibson collection held by Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway and came across these images quite by chance.  Gibson was a former Rector of the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway and these photographs, in which he features, appear to show him and what appear to be staff from the Nicolson taking a walk in the Castle grounds in Stornoway.  The draft catalogue suggests a date of late 1890s/early 1900s

The certainly dressed in their finery but I can’t help being alarmed by how skinny-waisted the women are – some serious corsetry going on I suspect!
