Friday photo: Ernest writes home

Regular readers of the blog and followers of the Friday photo will know how much we like what’s written on the back of postcards and this one is a belter!

A view from Lews Castle over the harbour

It’s April 1944 and Ernest is recently stationed in Lewis having flown in a plane for the first time.  The letter, written in tiny handwriting in order to cram in as much as possible, appears to be sent to his girlfriend and is full of descriptions talking about his work, meals in the mess and trips to the cinema.  He also comments on the dress of the women, the Sabbath traditions and likens Stornoway to the town of Peel on the Isle of Man.

Tightly written postcard text

I’ve put up a decent quality scan of the text so you read the letter for yourself – do enjoy it!
