Friday photo: Martins and the gardens

This weeks Friday photo is of Martins Memorial Church. Before the church was built, the home of the explorer Alexander Mackenzie stood there, Luskentyre House. He was the first man to cross what is now Canada to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793. I digress – that is not what this weeks Friday photograph is about. If you look to the left of the photograph, you will notice a garden. This garden belonged to Hugh Mathesons the baker. When we did our interesting Old Shops of Stornoway exhibition, we were told that Hugh Mathesons garden stretched from the back of the bakery (where Macneils is now) all the way up to Kenneth Street. Poor Hugh, thats alot of weeding!
