North Uist Historical Society get cataloguing!

David spent an the afternoon of the 14 November 2012 with Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath (North Uist Historical Society)  to assist them in cataloguing some of their collections.   A training day had already been undertaken earlier in the year and the group were raring to get stuck into some more collections to put their skills back into practice!

Isa worked on a small collection of correspondence from the factor of North Uist, H H Mackenzie, dating from 1926-1933.  These dealt with estate matters including feu duties, the rent of Sollas shootings, pier rentals, Heisker, siting a Doctor’s house , poaching and estate accounts.

Chrissie and Mary completed their catalogue of the papers of the Macdonald family of Crombagh.  The collection consists of family paper and documents in both English and Gaelic including bardachd, school plays, papers relating to local history collected by the family and even a copy of the original Historical Society constitution!

Margaret and Mary worked their way through files of papers of the North Uist Community Council consisting of minutes and correspondence from 1990-2001.  With help from David, they appraised the collection, throwing away non-relevant published material, sorting through the folders, repackaged it all into archive boxes and  then cataloguing it.  They got a lot done!

Everyone was eager to share tit-bits they were finding in the collections on which they were working with the group meaning that the afternoon flew by and everyone learnt something new – especially David!
