Friday photo; Road to Hushinish

Tomorrow the Islands Book Trust is hosting a boat trip from Hushinish to Scarp departing at 11am.  Scarp is famous for being the island where an experiment was carried out to see if post could be delivered by means of rockets.  This was the idea of Gerhard Zucker, a German inventor, who in 1934 failed in his attempts when the rockets he was testing across the Sound of Scarp exploded.

The picture above shows the road to Hushinish to the left and, rising through the middle, the road to Lochs.  The old bridge is still in place, though is no longer in use, and the ruins of blackhouse in the bottom left hand corner can still be seen today.  What is missing from the picture is of course the new housing development at Bunavoneader, which must have some of the finest views of any social housing project in Britain.
