Friday photo; For peat’s sake!

After slogging away at the project for several months, Donna has now completed her catalogue of the James Shaw Grant collection.  David is still to check over the final version, but it will soon be available for researchers, and should be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Lewis and Harris.

This photograph of four women taking home peats is taken from the James Shaw Grant collection.  The creels must have been very uncomfortable and heavy, yet they are still stacked high with peat.  It is hard to imagine women of even half the age of these four being able to carry that weight nowadays!
