Friday photo; Blaeus’ Atlas Novus

Donna and I spent an afternoon this week sorting Stornoway Library’s map collection and came across the above gem!  It is an old map of the Western Isles and West Coast of Scotland taken from the fifth edition of Blaeu’s Atlas Novus, published in 1654.  The above picture was taken using a camera without a flash, so it is not the best quality, however the map can be found in higher quality, along with the other maps of Scotland from Blaeu’s atlas, on the National Library of Scotland’s website.

I particularly enjoyed the figures surrounding the title of the map, especially the proud man on the left.  He seems very pleased with himself, or maybe he is just happy it’s Friday!

If you are interested in old maps of the Western Isles, a great read is Finlay Macleod’s Togail Tir, Marking Time:  The Map of the Western Isles, which is available through the Western Isles Library Service.  The library service also now have their own Facebook page, so be sure to search and ‘Like’ it to be kept up to date with new additions to stock and events held throughout the branches.
