Memories of Airidhantuim School

On the afternoon of the 8th December, Airidhantuim School is holding an informal ceilidh for past and present pupils to help them learn more on the history of the school. They want to hear from past pupils and staff about what they remember of their time in the school and how times have changed from then until now.

The school is working closely with Comunn Eachdraidh Nis to create an exhibition which will tell the story of the school from its opening on Christmas Eve 1877 up to the present day. The entry in the Barvas School Board Minute book states:

The School was this day formally opened by the Board in the presence of a number of the districts inhabitants, to whom matters of fees were fully explained and the school hours were fixed at from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm – Saturday to be a holiday.”

The School will close next year in its 135th year, when pupils will start attending the new Westside School in Barvas. The afternoon starts at 3.15pm and it aims to be a taster session to gather an idea on who has stories they wish to share and it also aims to get people of all ages together to discuss a common experience – school days!!
