Friday advert, K J Macdonald’s Chemist

Stornoway’s last locally owned chemist, K J Macdonald Ltd, is celebrating its 90th year in business this year and is now in its fourth generation of family ownership.  The shop was established by Kenneth John Macdonald, the present owner Karen Macdonald’s great grandfather.  We will be working with Karen to do a survey of the business records in the coming weeks as part of our project outcomes to work with 50 businesses.  We had a meeting with Karen earlier this week who told us that the local nickname for the shop ‘Kenny Frogans’ actually came from her great grandfather’s dog!  Apparently her great grandfather was known for constantly shouting after the dog, named Frogan, and ended up with the nickname as a result!

Check out this week’s Stornoway Gazette for more on Kenny Frogan’s history and for details of their recent ‘facelift’ by the Townscape Heritage Initiative.

The advert above is taken from a Nicolson Institute annual.  The annuals are full of adverts for local shops but also of course have photographs of past pupils! If you fancy having a search through to see if you or any family members are featured ask a member of Stornoway Library to see the collection.
