To my joy David and Kathleen the Librarian (official title) about a few weeks ago came across a few folders of photographs that we knew nothing about. To my greater joy, they are of postcards and photographs of North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula, Barra and Harris. The reason I am so pleased is because the library collection was very short on images other than of Lewis (or so we thought), meaning our Friday Photo has had a more Northern view than we would have preferred. Thanks to this find we can now post a more balanced Friday Photo, starting today!
The above photo shows mail being delivered across the North Ford of North Uist. This image ties in nicely with the current exhibition North Uist Historical Society has on Communication and Transport which started in April this year and will run until January 2012. Be sure to catch it while you can!
The same card is shown and described on page 69 of ‘The Western Isles, A Postcard Tour, 1. Barra to North Uist’ by Bob Charnley who has identified the photographer behind the series.
