Friday photo; Happy Birthday Canada!

Today is Canada Day, a country where many emigrants of the Western Isles settled.  In particular, a large number of Lewis folk emigrated and settled in the province in Quebec, where small towns and streets still bear the namesakes of their founders with names such as Tolsta, Dell and Stornoway found in an area known as the Eastern Townships.  The image shown above is of the opening of Gould church in 1900, which was built by emigrant families of the Western Isles.

The church still stands today as can be seen above.  If you would like to know more about the emigrants of the Western Isles in the Eastern Townships, click here for a website that has a comprehensive history of the people and the area.
